James C. Stapleton
University of Virginia '18
I am a third-year undergraduate at the University of Virginia double-majoring in Mechanical Engineering (B.S.) and Economics (B.A.) with a minor in Design Integration.
I have vast experience working on teams and taking a top-down systems approach to completing complex, technology-based projects. Through my Design Integration minor, I’ve gained valuable skills in team-based, interdisciplinary collaboration by creating projects such as a DC-motorized delivery robot that utilizes an LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP) database model to take orders and maintain an inventory on the internet. I’ve learned to translated my engineering problem-solving skills directly to economic models in my Economics major, and I can apply the same approach to a wide range of other real-world problems. I’ve also developed presentation expertise by writing a technical report on the data analysis I performed during my internship at the U.S. Naval Observatory, and then creating and delivering a research presentation to the observatory staff at a colloquium. I thrive on combining the technical aspect of analysis with the personal aspect of interaction and presentation. This summer, I will be working for General Electric in Atlanta as an Engineering Business Early Identification Intern.
In addition to my technical skills, I have also developed strong communication and team-building skills through a number of extracurricular activities. My peers selected me as one of only 55 undergraduates to live on the Lawn, the most central location on UVA's grounds. As an Operations Director for Camp Kesem at UVA, I worked with a team of my peers to plan, raise funds for, and execute a free summer camp for over 100 children whose lives have been affected by a parent’s cancer. I understand the meticulous planning and dedication it requires to see a large project from start to finish, and I know that I can now apply that understanding to future projects. As a member of Air Force ROTC, I have learned the importance of attention to detail, non-stop focus, time management, and making calculated split-second decisions to complete a mission. I know how to bring these concepts to the table and use them to achieve the goals of a team.
